What to Do with Broken Dishes

As you unpack, you may notice some items were damaged or broken during the move. While you don’t have to file a claim for every broken dish to the moving company, if you notice that many of the items were damaged, you should contact the company to find out more information. But if you come across a broken dish, you should pick out the larger pieces, put them in a bag, and throw the bag away so you don’t injure yourself.

When unpacking the rest of the box, you should carefully remove each piece and check it to make sure it is not cracked. Remove more broken pieces as you go and be careful about not cutting your hands. Wear gloves if you have them. Once the box is empty, do not break it down. Instead put it to the side and dispose of it when you can.

Give the Movers Some Water!

Even though many moving companies discourage feeding their movers lunch or tipping them, companies do allow movers to accept cold drinks. If you are moving on a hot day, offer your movers water or lemonade. Many people will set up a station where water will be available along with cups and ice. Storing items in a cooler and allowing movers to help themselves is easier than having to stop to find cups, water, and other items. Movers will be able to take turns without having to slow down.

While movers will be tying to load the contents of your home as quickly as possible, offering them a cool drink will be much appreciated. By respecting the movers, you can move the process along faster and feel good about respecting another person’s job. After all, moving by yourself might have been impossible if it weren’t for the movers.
